How?
The 7 Words System is defined by the idea that in all the complexity of human relationships, there are only seven core gestures of communication. They are encapsulated by the 7 primary words and accessed by 28 keywords. For example, Goodbye's keywords are these:
- Realization
- Decision
- Completion
- Moving On

The 7 aspects of expression are the essential themes within all things—they convey the necessary stages that healthy exchanges go through because they are the foundation of all thoughts, ideas and behaviors. So they can be useful for anything from business management to conflict resolution.
The awareness of their presence and use are signs of mastery of life. By deepening our understanding of these words, we can come to clarity, truth and completion in all our dealings and our personality compatibility with everyone in our lives. The 7 words can develop in us a mastery of communication that enables us to focus our minds, to speak our truth, and to thrive in all our corporate relationships.
Management is about handling change; excellent management is about handling change elegantly. In summary the system covers these ideas:
- I am the problem
- I can see how the 7 Words System works in theory…
- …and in practice within the context of management
- I can find 28 specific management areas that may need addressing—and solutions
- I am extending my field of responsibility to include global issues
- I am developing a more incisive mind by applying this method
Corporate Learning is about the journey from No to Yes being a delightful expression of wisdom and pragmatism. The journey is a good metaphor, because it suggests a starting point and a destination bridged by an adventure. We start with No. Where we are is not where we want to be—our situation can be improved, and we want to improve it. We aim to get to a place where we can say Yes to our circumstances. Of course, in practice, when we get there, we decide that another journey is required, because the horizon of our vision is never actually entirely reachable. However, certain aspects are achievable, and we want to accomplish them. We want to enjoy both the fruits of our efforts, and also—importantly—the process of moving towards them. As well as the goal, the journey itself is important—in fact more so, since there is no final goal.
For countless thousands of years, humanity has engaged in the matter of management. Kingdoms have been ruled, pyramids have been erected, cities have grown and traded with distant lands and campaigns have been pursued to fight wars, which changed the reach of empires. So it’s not a new idea to conceptualise…simply put it is the effective utilisation of resources towards the attainment of ones current ambition.
However, there are new ideas about how to do this. The ideas of the day reflect the choices and needs of today’s circumstances and expectations. In olden days it was often normal to employ slaves and disregard their comfort, and there were no sophisticated machines, let alone computers. These factors of production underpinned attitudes to management without debate or comprehension, because the absence of them could not be comprehended. Today we are also ignorant of future factors of production that are as yet unavailable—and yet the keenest of managers are the ones who can respond early to the opportunities afforded by new methods, and even participate in their development.
Let’s look again at these very familiar words:
No Hello Thanks Goodbye Please Sorry Yes
They are well known to us all, very probably a few of them in several languages, simply because they are fundamental. They are the basic messages and processes that we go through everyday in everything that we do. They can be seen to underpin each of our communications and each of our behaviours. However, although these 7 primary words are simple, their meanings are not always crystal clear. Perhaps they should be and perhaps for very careful speakers they are—but usually there is ambiguity because they are so often misused. So for each primary word there are four keywords and by studying these we can renew our sense of what we understand and want the primary words to mean. Do we want No to mean ‘perhaps if you put more pressure on’? Do we want Sorry to mean ‘I feel guilty’? The keywords are meant to help define the primary words in a way that fits with a more considered interpretation that would be seen as reasonable.
No establishes the boundary marker between inside and outside, acceptable or not, mine or not-mine. This boundary clearly identifies things as different from other things and it is constructively created out of our choices—since we have free will—which proclaim the truth of who we are.Hello is an expansion of attention, an opening up to the new so that exchanges can take place. In its most refined form it leads to communion with another. Thanks is appreciation for another thing or person, which raises their value, is expressed by giving and is truly felt in the heart. Goodbye begins with the realization that a decision is needed so that we can complete what we have been doing and move on. Please requires a vision of something we want and the intention to get it, which inevitably involves cooperation. At its highest level it is prayer. Sorry is the process of refinement that begins with a heightened sense of responsibility and a feeling of remorse for what our insensitivities have caused. We need to repair the damage if we are to release any issues arising. Yes when reluctant, is permission which moves through stages of greater willingness in acceptance, agreement and surrender.
